Lotus Pond: Where Technology and Mythology Meet at Mahakal Lok

by Joe Tracy, editor of Theme Park Magazine

The sacred city of Ujjain has added a new experience to its spiritual landscape. The Lotus Pond at Mahakal Lok now features an impressive multimedia show that combines water, light, fire, and projection technology to tell ancient stories in a modern way.

Inaugurated by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Mohan Yadav, this new attraction brings mythology to life through a carefully orchestrated blend of special effects. The show transforms the tranquil waters of the Lotus Pond into a canvas for storytelling, with the towering 9-meter Shiva statue serving as its centerpiece.

“Designing the Lotus Pond multimedia show with projection mapping wasn’t just about technology—it was about storytelling,” Smit Shah, founder of Symphony Fountains, tells Theme Park Magazine. “We transformed a sacred space into a canvas where devotion meets design, mythology flows through water, and every element, from jets to lasers, speaks the language of Lord Shiva. Immersion wasn’t the goal—it was the experience.”

Technology Behind the Experience

What makes the Lotus Pond show stand out is its combination of several cutting-edge technologies working together. The experience uses a Water Screen Projection System that creates a translucent screen from fine water mist. This unusual projection surface, used at major theme parks like Disneyland, gives images an ethereal, floating appearance that enhances the mythological storytelling.

The setup includes four high-lumens laser projectors that cast crisp, bright visuals even in low-light conditions. These work alongside RGB lasers and moving head lights that add color and motion to each scene. For dramatic effect, fire nozzles installed in the pond shoot flames at key moments in the narrative.

One of the most impressive technical features is the 3D projection mapping displayed directly on the statue of Lord Shiva. This technology allows images to conform perfectly to the statue’s shape, creating the illusion that the figure itself is changing before viewers’ eyes.

Stories From the Ages

The show takes visitors on a journey through Hindu mythology and Ujjain’s rich history. Audiences witness the famous Samudra Manthan (the churning of the cosmic ocean), along with stories from the four Yugas or cosmic ages. The narrative also highlights Ujjain’s importance as a center of learning and spiritual significance.

The combination of storytelling techniques, including voiceovers, music, and timed visual effects, creates an experience that’s both educational and entertaining. The content has been crafted to appeal to visitors of all backgrounds, from devoted pilgrims to curious tourists.

A retractable façade screen adds another dimension to the presentation, allowing for smooth transitions between different parts of the story. This layered approach to visual storytelling helps keep the audience engaged throughout the performance.

“At Mahakal Lok, the goal was to create more than just a show—we focused on shaping an atmosphere,” says Sonu Suthar, Architect, Peach Prime Consultancy. “The Lotus Pond Fountain Show is where architecture, design, art, and spirituality converge. With thoughtful attention to space and flow, we aimed to craft a place where mythology breathes and devotion comes to life.”

Collaborative Creation

The Lotus Pond show represents a successful partnership between several organizations. CS Direkt Events and Exhibitions served as the project execution partner, while Symphony Fountains provided the fountain technology expertise. Peach Prime Consultancy played a key role in integrating the various elements into a cohesive experience.

Peach Prime Consultancy brings 16 years of experience to the project, with founders Smit Shah and Pooja Shah leading a team of architects, engineers, and fine arts specialists. The company specializes in creating immersive attractions that blend cultural elements with modern technology.

This project is part of the larger Mahakal Lok corridor development near the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve most sacred shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. The new attraction has been designed to enhance the visitor experience at this important pilgrimage site.

A New Way to Experience Tradition

The Lotus Pond show at Mahakal Lok represents a growing trend across India—using modern technology to share traditional stories and cultural heritage. Rather than replacing traditional experiences, these multimedia presentations offer a complementary way for people to connect with ancient narratives.

Visitors to Ujjain now have the opportunity to experience mythology through this blend of water, light, and sound. The show creates memorable moments that bring ancient stories to life, making them accessible to new generations while respecting their sacred origins.

As Mahakal Lok continues to develop as a spiritual destination, the Lotus Pond experience stands as an example of how technology and tradition can work together to create something meaningful and impressive.

For those planning to visit Ujjain, this new attraction offers yet another reason to explore the city’s rich spiritual heritage—now told through the language of light, water, and fire.
