Disneyland Resort in California is set to embark on a remarkable journey to the lush alien world of Pandora, as Bob Iger, CEO of Walt Disney Co., announced plans for a new Avatar-based land during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference. This development aims to replicate the success of Pandora – The World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida.
A Glimpse into Pandora’s Expansion
The revelation came from Iger’s discussion on global future expansions across Disney parks. “We have one Avatar-based land, Pandora, in Florida; we’re going to put a second one in California,” Iger shared, hinting at the vast potential for further immersive experiences inspired by the blockbuster Avatar franchise.
This new land is a collaborative effort between Disney and “Avatar” director James Cameron and his team. It combines Walt Disney Imagineering’s creative minds and the acclaimed filmmaker’s visionary storytelling. The partnership promises to deliver an unparalleled experience that captivates guests with the awe-inspiring beauty and thrilling adventures of the world of Avatar.
Avatar Land Questions Remain
Many people were surprised by the proclamation of Iger at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference. While people were expecting an Avatar-themed attraction, based on past statements, few expected an entire land dedicated to Avatar. Specific details about the experience, including when it will be built, are being kept under wraps. Questions that fans are looking to be answered are:
- Will this new land contain the same rides as Pandora at Disney’s Animal Kingdom?
- Where will the land be built?
- Will DisneylandForward agreements with Anaheim have to be reached before work on the land can commence?
- When will construction begin, and when will it open?
- Will the new land be part of Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure? Based on past announcements, it is believed to be Disney’s California Adventure.
- Will current areas/attractions be torn down to help make room for it, or will it be entirely built in a new area?
Recent Developments and Future Prospects
The initiative to bring Avatar to Disneyland was first hinted at during a Disney earnings call in February 2023, with further elaboration at the 2023 IAAPA Expo suggesting the experience would find its home at Disney California Adventure. Although initially described as an “experience,” the recent announcement confirms plans for a fully-fledged land, expanding the scope of what fans had previously anticipated.
Pandora – The World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom
As you enter Pandora – The World of Avatar, you are transported to a distant moon teeming with alien life. Giant, moss-covered mountains seemingly float mid-air, defying gravity as waterfalls cascade down their sides. The landscape pulses with vibrant colors in the sunlight and under the dazzling glow of bioluminescent flora at night.
Exotic plant life, unlike anything on Earth, surrounds guests. Otherworldly creatures rustle through the undergrowth or soar overhead, and even the ground beneath your feet shows signs of life.
In the heart of the rainforest, the Na’vi River Journey takes you on a gentle boat ride through a bioluminescent cave. Pandoran creatures shimmer all around you, and the enchanting songs of a Na’vi shaman fill the air. Aboard Avatar Flight of Passage, you link with a mountain banshee for a breathtaking flight over Pandora’s stunning landscapes.
Many who have visited Pandora believe it is one of the best Disney theme park lands, especially at night. Whether guests at Disneyland Resort get this same experience remains to be seen.
