teamLab SuperNature Macao at The Venetian Marks Opening with Floating Orchids and Giant Clouds

by Joe Tracy, editor of Theme Park Magazine

In a symphony of art, science, and nature, the digital art collective, teamLab, and Sands Resorts Macao celebrated the grand opening of teamLab SuperNature Macao on June 1, 2023, at The Venetian Macao. This one-of-a-kind immersive experience had been in soft opening since 2020 but unveiled several new large-scale installations at its grand opening.

The teamLab SuperNature Macao, an expansive, immersive art space, offers visitors a multi-dimensional exploration of the synergy between humans and nature.

Floating Flower Garden: Orchids in a Zero-Gravity Symphony

The masterpiece of the grand opening was an interactive work titled Floating Flower Garden: Flowers and I are of the Same Root, the Garden and I are One. This innovative installation features over 8,000 live orchids blooming mid-air, seemingly suspended in space. The concept draws inspiration from zen gardens, encouraging visitors to merge with the floral spectacle around them harmoniously. As visitors approach, the orchids ascend, inviting them to step inside before descending again to form a living curtain.

Orchids, uniquely evolved to thrive without soil, are central to the installation, symbolizing both resilience and diversity. The installation not only showcases these beautiful flowers but also mimics their unique relationship with pollen-carrying insects. Visitors will experience changing scents throughout the day, culminating in a powerful fragrance at night, demonstrating the fascinating symbiosis between the orchids and their nocturnal insect partners.

Massless Clouds Between Sculpture and Life: Challenging Perceptions

Another key installation is the Massless Clouds Between Sculpture and Life, a giant cloud-like sculpture that challenges our perception of mass and form. It exists neither grounded nor rising but in an almost ethereal floating state. This transformative work allows visitors to physically interact, step inside, and even disrupt the sculpture, demonstrating an almost biological ability to repair itself – unless the damage exceeds its capacity to recover.

A Sip of Art: The Interactive EN TEA HOUSE Experience

Visitors can also look forward to the unique EN TEA HOUSE, where the act of pouring and drinking tea triggers digital flowers to bloom inside the teacups. When tea is poured, a small flower forms within the teacup and starts to expand, springing to life. As long as the tea remains, the flowers bloom ceaselessly. The bowl of tea transforms into an endless universe where flowers keep flourishing. Drinking the tea symbolizes taking in the infinitely expanding world.

The transformative nature of tea is brought to life in this immersive installation, reminding guests of the fleeting beauty in everyday rituals.

Radiant Art, Synchronization, and Thinking Three Dimensionally

The grand opening presented a new addition to the Light Sculpture series, featuring an installation that constructs three-dimensional objects from a collection of light planes. This work, currently exhibited exclusively in Macao, conjures a mesmerizing, writhing space of light in mid-air.

The Autonomous Abstraction, Continuous Phenomena from the Universe to the Self, is another interactive work to look for. It is composed of countless dots that blink and change color in unique cycles, demonstrating spontaneous order phenomena as they interact and synchronize with each other and with visitors.

Lastly, the renewal of Athletics Forest was featured at the grand opening. This creative, athletic space encourages visitors to understand the world through their bodies and three-dimensional thinking.
